Department Mandate
The Fisheries Department is saddled with the responsibility of providing enabling environment for growth of Private Sector Investment in Fisheries Value Chain so as to increase fish production, create jobs for the citizens of the State and generate revenue to Government.
Operational Units of the Department
In achieving the above stated mandate, The Fisheries Department is structured along the following Divisions/Units.
- Artisanal Fisheries Division
- Aquaculture Division
- Private Sector Investments, Capacity Building and Training Division
- Fisheries Value Chain Actors Registration and Data Unit
- Inspection and Enforcement Unit
Functions of Department of Fisheries
- Formulation and implementation of plans and programmes that will lead to the overall development of fisheries in Lagos State.
- Conduct Fisheries Training and Capacity Building.
- Sustain Artisanal Fisheries Development
- Promote Marine Agriculture Development Programme (Cage & Pen Project).
- Promote Aquaculture Development (Establishment and Management of Fish Farm Estates and Homestead Fish Ponds Programme).
- Provide legal framework for all Fisheries activities in the State.
- Ensure that cold rooms and all fish preservation equipment are operated using international best practises to ensure that good fisheries products are presented to consumers.
Service Pledge
- Promptness in discharge of duties by personnel of the department of fisheries towards achieving the activities mentioned above.
- Registration of farmers’ certificate to be ready for collection within one week of payment.
- Farmers in need of extension services are to be visited within 24 hours of request.
- Enforcement of the Fisheries edict in order to protect fisheries and also to ensure rational exploitation of the inland water resources in Lagos State.
- Providing platform for the organisation and participation of training and retraining of personnel and members of the public to equip them on standard practice.
- Development of fish markets at strategic locations in Lagos state.
- Distribution of fishing inputs to fishermen at subsidized rates.
- Propagation of Cage and Pen Culture System.
- Establishment of Fish Farm Estates.
- Prompt allotment of service plots to allotters of the Fish Farm Estates on confirmation of full payment.
Service Standard
- Prompt, accessible and accurate service delivery to members of the public.
Complaints and Redress Mechanism
- All enquiries and complaints to be forwarded to the office of the Director of Fisheries.
Revenue Lines
- Registration of fish farmers - N5,000.00 for fresh registration while renewal of registration is N2,000.00. This is subject to review.
- 1-day and Executive weekend training (Revenue depends on fees charged net of all approved expenses).
- Fisheries Development Levy from allottees of Fish Farm Estates - N20,000.00/plot
- ·Change of ownership Fees in Fish Farm Estates N250,000.00/plot
