Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu, in his bid to transform Lagos into a mega city status has taken on the 2nd tier of the food systems transformation programme with the establishment of modern (low maintenance) mid-sized agroproduce hubs with the aim to create unique market experiences for wholesalers/retailers and consumers alike.
The many benefits of this initiative will be empowerment and dignification of market traders from informal to semi-formal and formal operators; stimulation of local economies, availabilty of fresh produce as a result of the availability of proper storage equipments etc.
The mid-level market has been organized into 3 sections according to the proposed value chain
• The general retail section: This section is created basically for the general micro buy and sell of daily mid-level retail trading in the market supply chain with an allocated space of 986m2 for 96 retail outlets/stands.
• The sub dealership section (wholesale to retail): With an allocated space of 490m2, this section is designed to operate a higher level mechanism in the supply chain where authorized dealers will canvass deals between the core dealers of produce provided from the farm.
• The core dealership area in the dry and wet produce dealing market: This area is planned to be operated by (licensed) operators/dealers who will obtain fresh produce from the farm.
